Green Scheme Accreditation

Want to become more employable, enhance your skills and demonstrate your ability to work with low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants?

ARC Green Scheme Accreditation is the only national accreditation available for technicians to demonstrate they are qualified to work with natural refrigerants. Green Scheme provides a pathway for refrigeration and air conditioning technicians to upskill, and facilitates the use of new and emerging refrigerants and technologies into the industry.

It is voluntary, and incorporates key refrigerants not covered by the ARCtick scheme, specifically hydrocarbons, C02 (R744), Ammonia and HFO 1234yf.

Stand out from the crowd with natural refrigerants accreditation:
  • Accreditations (2 years) are available, based on refrigerant type: hydrocarbons, C02 (R744), Ammonia and HFO 1234yf
  • Green Scheme requires competencies associated with a relevant ARC refrigerant handling licence, plus further units of competency associated with the refrigerant type
  • Check you have the competencies required for that refrigerant’s Accreditation. If you need further training, contact your local TAFE or RTO and ask them if they deliver the relevant training.

Green Scheme is qualifications-based and provides industry and consumers with confidence that the industry-standard of high skills and professionalism will not be challenged.

Why get Green Scheme Accredited?
  • Employability – stand out from the crowd by proving your professionalism and competency to work with natural refrigerants to future employers
  • Safety – ensure your safety and the safety of your colleagues and customers
  • Promote your professionalism, skills and dedication to safety to your customers
  • All sectors are looking to work with natural and low global warming potential refrigerants.
  • Government OH&S departments in New South Wales, Victoria or Western Australia accept Green Scheme as proof of OH&S competence. Other states are likely to follow.

Green Scheme benefits for industry

Born of industry demand, Green Scheme Accreditation provides a pathway for refrigeration and air conditioning technicians to upskill, and facilitates the use of new and emerging refrigerants and technologies in the industry.

Green Scheme is voluntary and covers natural and low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. It builds on the national, skills-based ARCtick licence scheme for synthetic refrigerants.

Natural and low GWP refrigerants have their own set of challenges, and technicians need to be aware of these so they can manage them effectively and safely. Green Scheme benefits include:

  • Gives trainers more confidence to provide training in an uncertain market
  • Promotes safety for technicians, businesses and customers
  • Assists in new technology and refrigerant uptake
  • Provides clarity around course gaps and required course development
  • Upskilling pathway for technicians

These benefits, together with the need for improved technician safety, have driven climate control industry support for Green Scheme Accreditation. All mainstream industry associations support the scheme because of the benefits it provides.

Green Scheme benefits for consumers

Green Scheme Accreditation enables technicians to prove to consumers that they are competent and qualified to work with natural and low global warming (GWP) potential refrigerants.

This is significant, as many natural and low GWP refrigerants are flammable or operate at very high pressures.

There are many potential risks if consumers use non-accredited and un-qualified technicians to install or service their air conditioners (car and home) or refrigerators:

  • Sub-par installation/service which may mean additional services are required
  • Risk of product warranty becoming null and void
  • Safety risk to technician and consumers due to flammability or high pressure of refrigerant

For consumers or any size and type, from major facility managers to individual domestic customers, Green Scheme gives peace of mind.

For facility managers who have low-to-zero-GWP systems, Green Scheme addresses the challenge of ensuring they are 100% compliant.

Where an ARCtick licence is mandatory for people handling refrigerants prescribed under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations, Green Scheme offers peace of mind for non-prescribed refrigerants.
