A new video produced by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) highlights the valuable contribution Australia’s licensed refrigeration and air conditioning technicians make to protecting the environment..

Released on World Refrigeration Day, the video is designed to promote the role of licensed technicians in addressing climate change and improve awareness of the ARCtick licensing scheme.

The Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) said the video highlights the obligations of permit holders under the licensing scheme and the value they add to the sector.

ARC Chief Executive Officer Glenn Evans said raising awareness of HFC refrigerants would encourage consumers to consider their impact when getting a system installed, maintained or removed.

‘The video has been built into our licence application process, where applicants will watch it and learn about their  environmental responsibilities,’ he said.

‘This will ensure they are attuned to the environmental significance of their work before they sign up to become ARCtick licensed technicians and businesses.

‘At the same time, much of the Australian public is unaware that most air con and refrigeration systems contain HFC refrigerants, which contribute to global warming when released.

‘The consumer version of the video focuses on this and promotes the Look for the Tick website, which is being updated to make it easier than ever for consumers to find licensed professionals.

‘The video also helps to promote our industry to potential apprentices, demonstrating the meaningful role they can play in climate control, environmental protection and sustainability.’
